Application of Frame Semantics to Teaching Seeing and Hearing Vocabulary to Iranian EFL Learners

A term in one language rarely has an absolute synonymous meaning in the same language; besides, it rarely has an equivalent meaning in an L2. English synonyms of seeing and hearing are particularly grammatically and semantically different. Frame semantics is a good tool for discovering differences between synonymous words in L2 and differences between supposed L1 and L2 equivalents. Vocabulary ...

Semi-Supervised and Latent-Variable Models of Natural Language Semantics

This thesis focuses on robust analysis of natural language semantics. A primary bottleneck for semantic processing of text lies in the scarcity of high-quality and large amounts of annotated data that provide complete information about the semantic structure of natural language expressions. In this dissertation, we study statistical models tailored to solve problems in computational semantics, ...

Session 9: Natural Language Processings

Traditional approaches to interpretation in natural language processing typically fall into one of three classes: syntaxdriven, semantics-driven, or frame/task based. Syntaxdriven approaches use a domain-independent grammar to drive the interpretation process and produce a global parse of the input, accounting for each word of the sentence. Semantics-driven approaches use knowledge about the ca...

QAF: Frame Semantics-based Question Interpretation

Natural language questions are interpreted to a sequence of patterns to be matched with instances of patterns in a knowledge base (KB) for answering. A natural language (NL) question answering (QA) system utilizes meaningful patterns matching the syntactic/lexical features between the NL questions and KB. In the most of KBs, there are only binary relations in triple form to represent relation b...
